Intel Awards Ceremony - 2005

The Intel® Award for Best Integration of Technology in Education is an annual contest that aims to recognize and award teachers and schools for their efforts in implementing technology innovatively into the teaching learning process. The efforts of all those are rewarded who plan learning objectives and desired outcomes that match 21st century skills and competencies; design students’ learning experiences in a real world context and differentiate learning. Since inception in 2000, the Intel® Awards have witnessed enthusiastic participation from the education fraternity.

A separate category was created for Government Schools under both Teachers and Schools categories. For the first time Online Registration was introduced to make the process easier for the participants. Any teacher or school interested in participating in the contest had to register online. More than 1500 registrations were received in all.

There were various stages in the contest and at each stage entries were evaluated and short listed by

the Evaluation Agency. There was a detailed judging process, which included online template submission, to telephonic interviews and classroom observations.

To felicitate the winning schools/institution, teacher/teacher educators and student teachers, an Award ceremony was held on 4th April 2006 at Taj Residency, Chandigarh. His Excellency Gen (Retd.) S F Rodrigues, PVSM, VSM, Governor of Punjab & Administrator, Union Territory of Chandigarh was the chief guest for the occasion. The other dignitaries who attended the award ceremony were Mr. Vivek Atrey, Director, Information Technology, Chandigarh Administration; Mr. R.S. Gujral, Finance Commissioner cum Principal Secretary to Government of Haryana, Education and Languages Department ;Mr. K. K. Khandelwal, Commissioner and Director General School Education, Haryana .

Intel was represented by Ms. Paige Kuni, Worldwide Manager, K-12 Education Programs;
Ms. Juliana Sie See Chow, K-12 Education Programs Manager, Asia; Mr. Amar Babu, Managing Director, Intel South Asia; Ms. Claire Ma Asia Marketing Manager Education ; Mr. Ashutosh Chadha, Education Program Manager, India and Sri Lanka and Mr. Anshul Sonak, K-12 Education Program Manager, India.

About 200 teachers, principals and decision makers from schools in and around Chandigarh as well as the Press attended the award ceremony.

Mr. Anshul Sonak welcomed distinguished government officials and guests to the event. Mr. Ashutosh Chadha updated the audience about the Education Initiatives taken by Intel in India. Ms. Maya Menon from the evaluation agency shared in detail the evaluation criteria with the audience. Four Educators clubs- Koshish Chandigarh, Pragati Kolkata, K3 Chennai and Prerna Bangalore were awarded Technology Grants for implementing technology integrated education in their respective states.

The other dignitaries who addressed the event were Ms. Paige Kuni, Mr. R.S. Gujral, Mr. Vivek Atrey and His Excellency Gen (Retd.) S F Rodrigues. Ms. Paige Kuni enlightened the audience on “Leaping Ahead through Innovation”. She emphasized on connecting the knowledge with the real life. Mr. R.S. Gujral highlighted the role of Intel in the ICT implementation in the state. He was optimistic of great work and referred to the MOU signed between Haryana government and Intel. Mr. Vivek Atrey spoke about the technology initiatives in the city and highlighted on the C-TOSS and CITROP projects.
In the keynote address His Excellency Gen (Retd.) S F Rodrigues PVSM, VSM, Governor of Punjab & Administrator, Union Territory of Chandigarh, spoke about the 104 government schools in Chandigarh. He suggested Intel to take on leadership in order to reach out to the masses and to improve the teaching and learning processes by evolving innovative and effective technologies suited to the local needs. He also emphasized on the need for initiating holistic programs covering various aspects aimed at developing the potential of children, maintaining their interest level and constantly recharging their enthusiasm for achieving competence in different fields of endeavor. He said “children should start learning by mind and not by heart”

Ms. Juliana concluded the event with the vote of thanks.

Winning teachers and teacher educators showcased their projects at the venue. Ms. Paige Kuni, His Excellency Gen (Retd.) S F Rodrigues, PVSM, VSM, Governor of Punjab & Administrator, Union Territory of Chandigarh and the entire distinguished gathering interacted with the winners in the showcase area.
