PREPARE TO STAY AWARE

School teachers undoubtedly exercise greatest influence in shaping the personality and everyone holds these teachers in high esteem throughout their life. The debt of school teachers can never be repaid. Mrs. Priti Sharma is one such teacher who was given an opportunity that changed her teaching and her students' learning dramatically. Mrs. Sharma is an English teacher in Government Girls Middle School at, Sector – IV, R.K.Puram in New Delhi. The school imparts education to more than three hundred children from Hindi speaking background.

Mrs.Priti realized technology as a valuable tool when she happened to take the training from Intel ® Teach. She perceived that it deepens students’ understanding of the concepts and as a means of developing the research and presentation skills her students would need in their studies and workforce too.

As a part of her training, Mrs.Priti was asked to think and plan for a project. She chose“ The Disaster Management “ as India is one of the most vulnerable developing countries to suffer very often from various natural disasters namely drought, flood, earthquake and extensive fire.

The factors that cause an earthquake and extensive fire, the effects on the population and the environment were discussed and brainstormed. The teacher organized a fire safety drill in the school with the support of the Principal. Shri Sajjan Singh, Assistant fire Officer, NDMC was invited to display the drill to students that is a safety measure in the time of disaster. Each step of it was demonstrated to them. Mock drill was held in the school in order to make the students aware of earthquake and how to rush towards the open space within a few minutes. There are no words to describe the enthusiasm of children in carrying out this drill. The students were elaborated about the rules to bear in mind during the earthquake and fire burst.

Lalitha and Avneesh, class –VIII recall ,” We were not aware of the facts and things about the earthquake before the drill session. Now, we feel confident.” Their words reflect upon the strategies of Problem Based Learning, such as constructing knowledge and creative thinking. Despite the fact of coming from economically backward community having no computer at home, these children learnt the technology by using the computers in the school. They designed brochures, distributed pamphlets, and created a multimedia presentation, which was shown to the entire school.

Mrs. Sharma says,” Our Computer lab has 12 computers with an internet connection. Our schools provides a conducive environment to the students. We are student friendly teachers. Our Principal tries to give the best to the students. “It is needless to say that this factor has enabled the teachers and students to work together whereby they not only learn to integrate technology but also about the prevention of disaster, planning, management, and appropriate measures taken during the disasters. Sonu,Anjana, and Anjou Rani , VIII say with the light in their eyes ,”We know the safety measures and various methods adopted during the disasters to save our life as well as the life of victims .”
